New Zealand's first half
crown was minted in 1933.
The halfcrown ran until 1965,
when New Zealand stopped
having pre-decimal coins
minted in preparation for
decimilisation in 1965.
The New Zealand half crown obverse features the United
Kingdom monarch of the time.
The reverse shows the New Zealand Shield of Arms with Royal
Crown above, embellished with Maori designs. The surrounding
legend reads 'NEW ZEALAND HALF CROWN' and the date.
Prior to 1933 United Kingdom currency
was the official legal tender of New Zealand,
although Australian coins and notes were
also generally accepted.
30 pennies = 2 shillings and 6 pence
= 1/2 crown = 1/8 of a pound
